Evolution

The planet has existed for millions of years and has undergone changes through time. The ice ages, polar shifts, land mass shifts, extreme weather events, mass animal extinction and so on, have taken place at a universal scale and have caused the phenomenon of ‘evolution’ for life on earth. These shifts have caused the transcendence of old life, and brought new life to earth. Every being such as plants, animals and insects adapt to harsh environmental changes or shifts and are eventually a part of the cycle of evolution. Including the human race.

Evolution of man

Wikipedia defines Human evolution as the evolutionary process that led to the emergence of anatomically modern humans, beginning with the evolutionary history of primates—in particular genus Homo—and leading to the emergence of Homo Sapiens as a distinct species of the hominid family, which includes the great apes. The first evolution of man was found to be six or seven million years ago. The remains of the first homo sapiens were found in the African region about 300,000 years ago. If we read the theories of evolution, we will find that evolution is based on physical changes, heritable traits, genetic reshuffling between organisms where exchange of genetic material between different organisms leads to production of offspring with combinations of traits that differ from those found in either parent, interbreeding and so on.

We, who are part of the human race have a restricted perspective on evolution given that we are exposed to it through the lens of ‘historic events’ that have taken place in the past. Through the social sciences of history or anthropology and of course biology we are able to view how man has evolved through the ages, and lives the life he is living today. Would it not be fascinating to change this perspective we have on evolution? What if instead of viewing evolution as the largest historic phenomena of all time, we viewed evolution from a ‘current’ perspective? What if we saw ourselves as a race that is currently part of the largest wave of ‘evolution’ there ever was? Let’s attempt to unbox this concept.

The world as it is today?

Thousands are dying from the virus today. We have witnessed some of the largest mass killings over the last few decades. We have seen anger, exploitation, corruption, recession, terrorism and more. The doing of man has resulted in many man made catastrophes that we hear are irreparable. There have been multiple theories on the world coming to an end - it started in 2000, took centre stage in 2012 and then again garnered a lot of attention in 2020. While the last few decades have seen the rise of power, inequitable distribution of wealth and resources, inequality, disparity and more; it has also been witness to something else. This ‘something else’ is a profound wave of limitlessness that opens up the possibility of change, that creates an inkling that things may be ‘repairable’. We have seen a few people on planet earth who are either inventors - of gadgets, concepts, information that is changing the world and our lives for the better, we see an advent of sustainable solutions that are focused on saving the planet, we see amazing personalities who are working tirelessly in creating a better life for humanity, a few are functioning at the epitome of creativity thereby ensuring a wave of uplifting energies, a few others are teachers who are causing a shift in human minds thereby ensuring the secretion of happy hormones instead of the fearful cortisol.

Just like the yin and the yan, we see both extremes in a world of duality.

So, what happens from here?

When natural and manmade calamities reach the far end with the probability of the world coming to an end; along with the co-existence of minds that empower and uplift the human race, it definitely is testimony to the possibility of ‘evolution’.

If this is not a phenomenon where we are sitting at the brink of evolution, then I don’t know what is. Yes, evolution is a phenomenon that we cannot witness through just one life time, as it takes place over centuries. But is there a possibility that we are part of the wave? Is it possible that the years that we are here on planet earth are some of the crucial years of evolution that is panning centuries? Is there a possibility that it isn’t? Yes!

Is there a possibility that it is? Why not?

Unboxing evolution

The human mind plays an integral role in almost every phenomenon that enforces itself on planet earth today. Largely, it is us humans who are responsible for any catastrophe. The erosion of the amazon, the depletion of the ozone layer, increasing carbon footprint and so on has been caused as a result of the human mind. Empowering inventions, sustainable business, digital access to our loved ones across the globe, meditation, energy healing, transforming our own realities, entrepreneurship, opening our minds to impossibilities, personal transformation and so on are also a result of the human mind.

All of these were concepts before they become tangible, and all of these concepts have first taken shape in the minds of us - the human race. So, evolution in the current context is really about the mass movement of the human mind. As a human race - are concepts of creativity, sustainability, transformation, learning, higher consciousness important to us; or are we more involved in overpowering, war, terrorism, hoarding, corruption?

Hundredth monkey effect

The hundredth monkey effect is a hypothetical phenomenon in which a new behavior or idea is said to spread rapidly by unexplained means from one group to all related groups once a critical number of members of one group exhibit the new behavior or acknowledge the new idea. Now imagine a time when a critical mass of human minds is engaged in thoughts and concepts of love, transformation, positive change, sustainability, gratitude, solutions, knowledge and so on; it opens up the possibility of the human minds on the entire planet moving towards exhibiting this ‘new’ thought and behavior. It is only a matter of time for the wave of evolution to manifest. The process has begun.

How can we unbox evolution and look at it in the current context?

Having acquainted ourselves to the possibility that we may be part of the largest wave of evolution, albeit just a drop in the ocean; that the human mind and the resultant actions are playing an unprecedented role in the process of evolution; and the 100th monkey effect opens up the notion of sustainability rising above hoarding, transformation rising above terrorism, sustainable business and entrepreneurship rising above inequity and disparity and more; the question we probably need to focus on is ‘What is my role?’, ‘How can I be selected to be part of the team that plays this game?’ or ‘Do we want to be part of the 100 monkeys?’

Here’s a simple guide on how we can affect the 100-monkey effect:

1. Let’s watch our minds - be aware of our thoughts - are they progressing towards the yin (hoarding, fear, corruption) or towards the yan (sustainability, transformation, peace)

2. Remember that our thoughts are not our own. We are only a portal that is receiving universal thoughts; hence we have a choice to choose what our thoughts can be.

3. Our thoughts are based on what we consume, on what we see, hear, watch. Let’s attempt to be conscious of what we choose to consume. What do we follow on facebook or instagram? What are the shows we watch on netflix? Let’s watch our responses to what we consume. It is causing joy and love, or is it causing fear and discomfort. The answer to this question must influence our choice of consumption

4. Knowledge: There is more than enough out there to consume that causes pure joy, there is so much to learn, opening up so many possibilities. Let’s take a decision to be on the lookout and we shall find.

5. Our beings are based on word and action - every word we utter and action we take has an impact on evolution. Let’s attempt to only empower with every word, and bring positive change with every action

Wishing that we witness this wave with pomp and prosperity!
